Political Doctrine

English//

When entering politics, someone might have motives of money [$poyshapati$] or power, but the true essence of politics is ‘service’ [$khedmot$]; and serving is certainly a mystical or spiritual [$marefoti$ / $adhyattik$] task.

Any contemplation beyond death, any conscious decision we make for the sake of others, and our thoughts regarding the well-being of the world and humanity even after our death are essentially spiritual affairs—a sign of a spiritual life [$marefoti\ zindegi$].

Being spiritual is simultaneously a human destiny and a necessity—a divine blessing [$khodayi\ rohmot$], though to many, it might seem like a curse! Human life is so fragile, and this realization haunts us so relentlessly that it often drives us insane, making life feel utterly futile, sometimes even pushing us toward suicide [$khudkushi$]!

Suicide [$khudkushi$ or suicide] is a rather complex phenomenon; it creates a moment where an individual’s liberty [$azadi$] is practically suspended—it marks the ultimate limit of liberty. Therefore, society commends the act of preventing someone’s suicide, even if it goes against that person’s immediate wish!

Thus, humans are spiritual/mystical creatures [$marefoti\ maklukat$]. A person’s worldly destination [$duniyabi\ monzil$] in life is to be happy or to remain immersed in deeply personal spiritual devotion. Perhaps that is why a general blessing from elders is, “Live in peace and happiness.”

The prerequisite for being happy is peace [$shanti$] [one meaning of Muslims seeking Islam is therefore this: they wish to establish peace; because the word ‘Islam’ itself means—peace!].

The foundational purpose/destination [$purpa\ccedil/monzil$] of politics is this peace—generating and establishing peace within society. Each political party is, in fact, a distinct method [$torika$] or school of thought [$moktob$] for establishing peace in society, a distinct draft [$musabida$] of peace. Intellect [$akol$] and conscience [$bibek$] are divine blessings bestowed upon humans by God, and a necessary outcome of these blessings is that humans lack a single, general consensus. This becomes even more certain when we realize that humans are creatures [$maklukat$] who do not know the beginning or end of this world. The mere possibility of error gives rise to multiple opinions, parties, and schools of thought, which is why running a state or society based on a single ideology or opinion must be kept time-bound/temporary.

Peace is often an illusion; keeping things quiet by brute force might look like an arrangement of peace! True peace implies the state that follows a voluntary agreement [$kobuliyot$] to remain peaceful—a sincere, heart-felt consent. The absence of such peace in society can be viewed as a sign of oppression [$julum$]. When a deficit of justice [$insaf$] appears, peace in society diminishes. Peace is like a well, and the stone thrown into that well is oppression [$julum$]. Oppression is a calamity in the well of peace, and the splashing up of calm waters is resistance [$hulahuli$ or $potirodh$].

Oppression [$julum$] always means a deficit of justice [$insaf$], and a deficit of justice disrupts peace in society. Furthermore, when there is a lack of voluntary agreement [$kobuliyot$], the possibility of oppression arises. Thus, a lack of agreement marks the beginning of slavery [$golami$] (pain and suffering), and this is where crime [$keraime$] begins. Even disease is a form of slavery (pain and suffering), which is why public health ought to be a political promise and should fall under the state’s duties.

Crime and sin are two different things; sin is a matter of religion, whereas crime is social. Sin is a matter between an individual human and God; whereas, since a crime requires a violation of the law of consent [$kobuliyot$], it requires more than one human or creature to occur—making it inherently social. In this way, a sin becomes a crime by becoming public or social. However, merely being public is not enough; a major violation must occur—it must cause damage to another member of society. Substantial damage to the social collective can also create the potential for crime. Yet, since individual liberty [$azadi$] is extremely precious, avoiding the infringement of that liberty is a primary duty even for society itself. Defining crime is ultimately the virtue [$fojilot$] of the compromise contract between the individual and society. Individual liberty is invaluable because human intellect [$akol$] and conscience [$bibek$] constitute human nature [$fitrat$], a divine blessing; on the other hand, since society is more powerful than the individual, the individual’s nature [$fitrat$] remains as a divine trust [$khodayi\ amanot$] with society. Society must honor the rights [$hoq$] of the individual precisely to avoid breaching that trust [$amanoter\ kheyinot$]. If adequate arrangements for individual liberty are lacking in society, not only does the individual’s worldly ultimate goal [$monzile\ mokchud$] remain unfulfilled, but it also leads to meddling in the individual’s relationship with God, creating the possibility of social idolatry/polytheism [$shamikik\ sherek$]. Just as individuals form a society through a contract, a contract also takes place between the individual and society. A human child/individual needs society for survival, and for that reason, the individual sacrifices a portion of their liberty to enter into a contract agreeing to certain conditions of society.

When oppression [$julum$] or crime occurs, the victim is owed compensation [$khotipuron$]. Extracting compensation for the victim’s loss is the duty of the society-state; this is the first step toward justice [$insaf$]. If justice is not established, society risks spawning a cycle of oppression. Justice must be established to dissolve the resentment [$rejentment$] that builds in the victim’s mind; justice minimizes the potential desire for revenge [$rivenj$] or retaliation that may arise in the victim.

On the other hand, since oppression [$julum$] often breeds anger and hatred in the victim, if victims attempt to take revenge themselves, excesses may occur, giving rise to new oppression—they might exact more than the compensation owed, turning the victims themselves into new oppressors [$jalem$]! Herein lies the essence of law and courts: in any crime, the victim is owed compensation; but justice requires fulfilling three distinct elements—compensation, the dissolution of the desire for revenge/retaliation, and punishment [$panishment$] (beyond mere compensation). The criminal owes punishment for breaching the social contract, attacking human nature [$fitrat$], and usurping rights [$hoq$] through their oppression. We can call sentence or punishment the necessary consequence of breaching the social contract and attacking human nature/usurping rights. Justice [$insaf$] serves as the safety fence for human nature [$fitrat$], making it an essential trust [$amanotdari$] for the society-state.

This is the true essence of the state. The state is a system that arranges peace in society by establishing and protecting justice [$insaf$]. It guarantees compensation for oppression [$julum$], brings punishment under the rule of justice, punishes the oppressor [$jalem$], and thereby dissolves the warmth/rage [$ushma$] and desire for revenge in the mind of the oppressed [$mojlum$].

Now, in any system, there are divisions at the bottom, top-and-bottom hierarchies, and someone must perform the necessary tasks. Thus, a system grants extra power to certain individuals—the system must grant it; meaning, the system creates power dynamics among individuals in society. And extra power inherently carries the potential for oppression [$julum$]; because the powerful person possesses the necessary extra power to bind others in the chains of slavery [$golami$]. It must be reiterated that enslavement or slavery begins precisely with the violation of the law of consent [$kobuliyot$].

Here we find the true destination of politics—earning that extra power required to govern, and securing the consent [$kobuliyot$] of citizens out of the necessity for its legitimacy. This consent, however, cannot be assumed to be permanent; citizens must retain the opportunity to withdraw their consent. A system must exist to obtain and renew citizen consent at regular intervals. To ensure that someone’s extra power does not become the cause of citizens’ slavery, and so that citizens can mete out political punishment if necessary, this renewal system is essential to keep the potential for oppression/slavery—inherent in extra power—to a minimum. The renewal system is also the essential method for executing political punishment.

Therefore, citizens/the public construct the state precisely to keep slavery to a minimum and to prevent oppression or violations of justice [$insaf$]. Yet, by becoming a system, that very construct simultaneously creates and maintains the potential for slavery. It hands over extra power to a few citizens, and then attempts to control that immense power by creating politics, elections, laws, and courts. Citizens/the public draft the state’s blueprint or constitution, and through regular elections, they aim to withdraw their consent to keep that syndicate of extra power accountable to political punishment/sentencing.

From the perspective of the public/citizens, the state is constructed with the intention of serving [$khedmot$] them; meaning, the duty of the ruler and the system is to serve its owner, the public. But given the power dynamics and the new potential for slavery generated in this entire cycle, one must admit that the state is actually a necessary evil! And for that reason, the only form of slavery in the world that commands moral authorization is the ruler’s slavery—where becoming a ruler means agreeing to become a servant/slave to the people by serving the citizens.

The Cycle of Politics and the State

Rule of brute force $\gg$ Rule of oppression [$julum$] / Nimrod-Oppressor [$Nomrud-Jalem$] $\gg$ Suspension of the rights of the weak $\gg$ Permanent slavery [$golami$] of the weak $\gg$ Oppression / Violation of justice [$insaf$] $\gg$ Rage/Hatred [$ushma/ghenna$] (in the hearts of the public) $\gg$ Rebellion/Revolt [$hul/rivolt$] $\gg$ Chaos $\gg$ Innumerable small oppressions $\gg$ Desire for peace $\gg$ Necessity of a social contract $\gg$ Elections / Securing consent [$kobuliyot$] $\gg$ Order / Rules and regulations $\gg$ Governance $\gg$ System $\gg$ Power dynamics $\gg$ Potential for oppression $\gg$ Suspension of elections $\gg$ Absence of consent $\gg$ Idea/Feeling/Aura of slavery $\gg$ Tyranny / Rule of oppression / Nimrod-Oppressor

To preserve peace, a state must perform 3 essential tasks. If these 3 tasks are achieved, the feeling of slavery, as well as the public’s need and probability for revolt [$hul$] to overthrow tyranny/Nimrod/oppressors, will remain at a minimum:

  1. Elections: Regularly renewing the public’s consent [$kobuliyot$]. Providing the opportunity for the public to supervise the ruler-servant [$khadem$]; upholding citizens’ freedom of conscience and their right to discuss the ruler’s record of deeds [$amolnama$].
  2. Establishing Justice [$Insaf$]: Dissolving the rage/hatred [$ushma/ghenna$] among the public.
  3. Political Punishment for Bad Governance: Withdrawing the public’s consent / arranging the public’s right to divorce [$talaq$] the rulers.
